The Dreaded Mornings
Anyone with kids will know that mornings are often made up of rushing, screaming, relentless searching and once again some more rushing. What add to do build up of frustration is the profound snail pace of kids when it comes to getting ready. It’s like every day they test your patience by finding slower ways to get ready. And than as they eventually emerge out of their rooms, you think to yourself…Wow thank goodnes were ready to go. Just to be met with half dressed child. By this time if you had to be a cartoon character there would be steam coming out of your ears. But because you have to be an adult around here you politely (without losing it) ask where is the rest of the clothes. While knowing in the back of your head you will be faced with a dead stare. But hey enough of this, kids will be kids, and this too shall pass.
We might not be able to fully control our children, there are things we can take control of and make change for the better. Making those dreaded mornings faster and calmer for everyone.
But be WARNED: IT DOES NOT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT……
Now don’t you think I have these things aced, my friend I’m far from it. But that’s why this is a journey to becoming a better version of ourselves (thank you Rachel Hollis for this phrase).
1) WAKE UP EARLIER...THAN YOUR KIDS
Now this doesn’t come easy. If you are sleep lover like me, you’l understand how hard it is to wake up earlier. But trust me it’s worth the effort. One of the biggest mistakes a person can make here is set unrealistic and unreasonable goals. Setting yourself up for failure by trying to wake up an hour or two hours earlier will just make you miserable and make you quite. Which defies the point of this exercise. Even if it’s just 10 or 15 minutes earlier. The idea here is to give your mind a chance to wake up and re-center. Unlike being woken up by a moaning child, or trying to get ready while holding a toddler. Oh and by the way if you’re smiling that is probably because you’ve been there to. I got you sister, we shall conquer.
2) FORGET THAT SNOOZE BUTTON EVEN EXISTS.
Snooze button, oh dear that is probably my biggest enemy when it comes to getting up in the morning. I have to admit (which I’m not very proud of)that I’d use to set 5 different alarms set in 5min intervals. Yup, you read it right, 5 alarms! What makes it worse, I’d still battle to get up. So since my husband is better at this whole waking up thing, we decided to set the alarm on his phone. This way I can’t snooze.
3) THE NIGHT BEFORE
After we have put the kids down to sleep I start prepping the lunches and everything needed for the next day. Believe it or not I use to them in the mornings. Big mistakes. Prep as much as you can the night before. Set out a task list for the morning so that you can go to sleep with a peaceful mind. So that there is no confusion whose lunchboxes are whose I labelled everyone’s lunch boxes.
4) PREP SCHOOL CLOTHES
This is something I am still working on to remember each evening. Layout your childs school clothes the night before. If you have time hang up sets for the week in advance. Than you won’t have crazy scrambling looking for clothes in the mornings. That goes for your own clothes as well. If your child is old enough, give the task to them. To teach them responsibility and independence.
5) ELIMINATE CHAOS AND DEFINE EXPECTATION
The only way for a routine to work successfully is for everyone to be aware and agree on their responsibilities every morning. Create a command center with checklists. That way if someone is unsure of what is next, all they need to do is have a look at the checklist.
